Stargazing 2025: Watch these 5 rare astronomical events from Bhopal

Are you into stargazing? If so, 2025 is the perfect year to gaze at Bhopal’s skies. This year, some rare celestial events are happening that you can’t miss. Here, I’m going to tell you in detail which events are worth seeing and how to enjoy them.

1. Twin Comets SWAN & Lemmon aur Orionid Meteor Shower

  • Kab: October 21, 2025
  • What’s worth seeing:
    Comet Swan and Comet Lemmon will appear together in October. The Orionid meteor shower will also peak on this day. Meaning, you’ll get to see an amazing combination of comets and shooting stars simultaneously!
  • My Experience Tip:
    I watch this event after sunset near Upper Lake. You need dark skies, away from city lights. Binoculars make the view of the comets even clearer.

2. Comet 3I/ATLAS – One Rare Interstellar Visitor

  • Kab: October 3–5, 2025
  • What’s worth watching:
    This comet has traveled outside our solar system, and is only the third interstellar comet ever observed. It will be seen passing near Mars and Jupiter.
  • My Experience Tip:
    Spotting this comet near Jupiter is easy with a telescope. It can be a little more difficult with the naked eye, but the experience is unforgettable.

3. Harvest Supermoon

  • Kab: October 6, 2025
  • What’s worth seeing:
    A supermoon is a full moon that will appear 14% larger and 30% brighter than a normal moon. The October moon is near the equinox, making it perfect timing for photography and stargazing.
  • My Experience Tip:
    I usually go to South Park and the city outskirts to watch. The moonrise view is literally breathtaking, a magical glow is felt.

4. Draconid Meteor Shower

  • Kab: October 8–10, 2025
  • What’s worth seeing:
    The Draconids are famous for their brilliant display. The best views are in the evening. The moment of seeing the shooting stars is always heart-touching.
  • My Experience Tip:
    If you want to take photographs, be sure to bring a tripod and a wide-angle lens. Also bring a comfy mat and tea; they’re perfect for long observations.

5. Zodiacal Light – False Dawn

  • Kab: October 19–31, 2025
  • What’s worth seeing:
    This is a triangular glow that appears in the western sky after sunset. Sunlight reflects off interplanetary dust, making it a rare sight.
  • My Experience Tip:
    Get away from city light pollution; the best views are on the outskirts and at elevated points. Some people even call it a spiritual experience – personally, I feel like I’m connecting with the universe.

6. Mars & Saturn Close Approach

  • Line: November 12, 2025
  • Highlights:
    Mars and Saturn will appear so close that it will appear as if both planets are in a single line. This rare planetary alignment is a must-watch moment for stargazers.
  • My Tip:
    Binoculars make it easier to observe the planet’s colors and rings. It’s best visible in the evening, and the best view is from city outskirts.

7. Lunar Eclipse (Partial)

  • Date: December 5, 2025
  • Highlights:
    A partial lunar eclipse can be seen from Bhopal. A part of the Moon will be cast into shadow, creating a beautiful reddish hue.
  • My Tip:
    For a full moon, look at the view before and after the eclipse for comparison – the difference will be clearly visible. A tripod and DSLR are helpful for photography.

8. Geminid Meteor Shower

  • Date: December 13–14, 2025
  • Highlights:
    The Geminids are one of the most reliable and colorful meteor showers, peaking at 120 shooting stars per hour. It’s the perfect celestial show for the whole family!
  • My Tip:
    Bring warm clothes and a mat. If possible, get away from the city – the clear night sky on the outskirts of Bhopal is an amazing experience.

9. Jupiter at Opposition

  • Line: November 1, 2025
  • Highlights:
    Jupiter will pass closest to Earth, meaning the planet will appear bright and large. Its moons can be easily seen with a telescope.
  • My Tip:
    I usually observe from near Upper Lake with a telescope set up. The view of Jupiter and observing the movement of the moons is quite mesmerizing.

10. Venus & Mercury Evening Conjunction

  • Date: December 20, 2025
  • Highlights:
    Venus and Mercury will appear close to each other in the evening sky, creating a dazzling bright pair.
  • My Tip:
    Spot within 30–45 minutes of sunset. This rare evening conjunction is perfect for photography.
